Botox, Dysport, Xeomin
Neuromodulators have been around for a while. Botox was the first neuromodulator, and now Dysport and Xeomin are available. Neuromodulators are used to perform “facial shaping,” and can be used alone or in combination with a filler to achieve facial enhancement. Dr. Valaie holds certificates of advanced training in the use of neuromodulators.
Neuromodulators are given by injection into the muscles of your face, and they relax muscles by blocking nerve impulses that stimulate those muscles to contract. They work best in the areas of expression in your face. If you have deep frown lines, the muscles beneath the skin in that area are contracted, and the neuromodulator will work to stop nerve impulses from allowing that muscle to continue to contract, effectively paralyzing the muscle.
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is the trade name for a neuromodulator derived from botulinum toxin. It paralyzes select muscles to achieve facial smoothing in areas of deep wrinkles and furrows. Botox works well to eradicate severe to moderate frown lines between the brows, also known as glabellar lines.
The best candidates for Botox are healthy men and women with concern about lines and wrinkles appearing on their foreheads or around their mouths and eyes. These patients are often not ready or not interested in having a traditional facelift or brow lift. Patients with a loss of facial volume in the targeted areas may benefit from the addition of dermal fillers to their treatment, and some patient may benefit more from a minimally invasive lift.
Botox injections are provided in the clinic only by Dr. Valaie. As soon as the injection is complete, you are ready to return to work or other activities. There may be some small redness at the site of the injection for an hour or so.
You can expect the injection to take three to seven days to reach full effect, and the effects of the injection will generally last four to six months. As the muscle begins to return to contraction, you may require another injection of Botox, but over time, the lines and wrinkles appear less severe, because the muscles have learned to relax.
Because is it a neurotoxin and it is important to recognize that Botox should only be administered by a highly trained professional in a clinical setting to avoid major complications that can happen by inexperienced hands.
